A few technical

Ceramic was born of the chance union of four elements: earth, water, air and fire.
Any object that has been transformed by firing can be called ceramic.

There are four types of ceramics:

  1. Porcelain, the most precious ceramicIn the Limousin region, this is a story that dates back to the 18th century, when production began. The clay is made up of kaolin (50%), feldspar (25%) and quartz (25%). Kaolin is a clay with the unusual quality of remaining white after firing. The clay withstands firing at temperatures of up to 1400°C. It is at this temperature that vitrification occurs, and this gives porcelain its solidity and its translucid quality, giving it a very high resistance to impacts and ageing, unlike faience. The essential element, which justifies the reputation for excellence enjoyed by Limoges Porcelain among the general public, is the final stage of decoration. The decorating involves many different processes, and all require a manual dexterity that takes a long time to acquire.
    The reputation of Limoges porcelain is such that the name of the town immediately evokes the art of porcelain.

  2. Stoneware clay is a clay that contains a high level of silica.The clay withstands firing at 1250°C. At this temperature, the clay reaches the limit of vitrification. It remains opaque, but the intense heat creates a very compact texture that makes it waterproof. The colour can vary from greenish grey to brown.
  3. FaienceThis is a mixture of clay, chalk, feldspar, dolomite and silica which undergoes a first firing to around 1000 ° C then is plunged into a bath of tin-based glaze. After a second firing, at around 950 ° C -980 ° C, the tin gives the glaze a brilliant white appearance that can be decorated. Faience remains porous after firing.
  4. Terracotta or pottery uses simple worked clay fired at about 600-900 ° C.The firing at low temperature makes a porous product. It can be covered with a glaze containing different metal oxides.
